A girl headed back to school. With the school year right around the corner, you are probably focused on school supplies, new shoes, and back to school clothes. Dentistry is likely the last thing in your mind, but it’s actually a good idea to schedule your child’s next cleaning and checkup appointment before school starts. Dr. Stephen Scotto-Lavino, your dentist in Selden, explains how scheduling your child’s routine dental visit now will benefit them.

Schedule Now – Before it becomes Too Hectic

Back to school brings with it a flurry of activities including sports, back to school night, and other extracurricular activities. Trying to fit a dental appointment in after school may become challenging, and it’s so much easier if your child doesn’t have to miss school for their dental care. Schedule your child’s appointment before school starts while your schedule is more relaxed.

Take Care of Any Treatment Needs

When you bring your child in before school starts, we’ll be able to detect and diagnose any treatment needs such as cavities needing fillings. It’s also a good time to take care of these concerns prior to the start of school so your child doesn’t experience any pain or discomfort that could disrupt their school day. We’re often able to take care of small treatment issues the same day your child has their cleaning and checkup, saving you an extra trip to our office.

Additional Services for Children

As your child gets older, we may suggest some additional services for them including fluoride treatments or dental sealants. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that will strengthen and help build your child’s developing teeth. Dental sealants are a thin protective coating we place over the chewing surface of their teeth to protect from the acids and bacteria that cause cavities.

If your child participates in sports, their routine checkup is a good time to discuss with Dr. Scotto-Lavino the right protective wear for their particular sport. Did you know that 40% of dental emergencies are caused by sports injuries? Make sure to protect your child’s teeth and mouth with a proper fitting sports guard.
