Dr. Stephen Scotto-Lavino and his Selden, NY team encourage patients to examine their flossing routine to receive maximum benefit from their efforts. Many patients dislike flossing, but the majority of flossing related complaints are actually the result of improper technique. Thorough dental hygiene at home protects teeth from decay, and significantly reduces risk for periodontal (gum) disease. Without proper flossing, you’re not cleaning some of the most at risk parts of your teeth.  Dr. Scotto-Lavino and his team invite you to read more about flossing and its benefits, or call to schedule a dental hygiene visit to find out more.

Gum Disease Prevention and Treatment in Selden, NY

October 20, 2014

181862636Take care of your gums and your gums will take care of you. This may sound like grandmotherly advice, but it’s true. Healthy gums not only help to ensure a healthy mouth and teeth, but a healthier you, too. From his office in Selden, NY, Dr. Stephen Scotto-Lavino and his staff have been helping Long Islanders avoid gum disease with quality dental care for more than 30 years.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, affects the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth. There are actually two types of gum disease. The first and less serious form is gingivitis. Signs of gingivitis include:

  • Gums that bleed easily when you brush or floss
  • Swollen gums
  • Gums that are tender
  • Gums that are redder than pink in color
  • Bad Breath
  • Gums that appear to be receding

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, then you’d be wise to schedule an appointment with Dr. Scotto-Lavino sooner rather than later in order to prevent the more severe type of gum disease, periodontitis. In addition to the symptoms that evidence gingivitis, signs of periodontitis include:

  • Bright red or even purple gums
  • New spaces between your teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth no longer fitting together when you bite
  • Evidence of pus between your teeth and gum, a sign of infection

Periodontal Therapy in Selden, NY

If Dr. Scotto-Lavino finds that you have mild gum disease, then simply teaching you how to take better care of your teeth and gums when you brush and floss at home may be all that’s required. On the other hand, if the disease is more severe—and we’ll be able to tell by examining any spots that bleed and by probing and measuring the depth of pockets in the gums around your teeth—then we may recommend periodontal therapy. This procedure involves a deep cleaning of the gums so that the infected tissue can heal.
